Risk of dengue fever from unsealed water tanks
Brisbane residents are urged to have their rainwater tanks checked properly after a CSIRO study revealed that non-compliant tanks may provide the ideal environment for the mosquito Aedes aegypti, the type that is known for spreading dengue fever.
Unsealed, damaged or modified rainwater tanks could allow the tropical mosquito species to move around freely and potentially survive during Brisbane winter, risking an outbreak of the infectious disease. Findings of a controlled experiment show that 70% of the mosquito species were able to survive to adulthood in rainwater tanks.
The water tanks don’t need to be removed, but they should be checked and maintained to prevent them from forming the ideal environment for Aedes aegypti to thrive.
