Is running an air conditioner costly?
Often people are nervous about using their air conditioner because they are worried about how much it is going to cost and for good reason. Air conditioning can account for between 30 and 60 per cent of the monthly power bill during the summer. A window unit uses between 500 and 1500 watts while a central air conditioning system can use up to about 3500 watts. This is a lot of power! A floor fan will use roughly 100 watts, meaning a central system is equivalent to 35 floor fans.
There are a number of ways you can keep your bill down without overheating. First thing is to set the thermostat up as high as you can. While it is nice to have the house super cool, a few degrees can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year.
The next way to keep your bill down is to have ceiling fans installed. They are far cheaper to run at roughly 40 watts, and can drastically lower the temperature when you have the air conditioning running.
Another way to get improved air conditioning for less is to only cool the room or rooms that you need to be cooled. Many people cool their entire house when they only use one or two rooms. This is wasteful and expensive.
