Common signs that your air conditioner might have a water leak
How good is it to be able to rely on an air conditioner when the humidity outside gets unbearable… With the push of a button, we can regulate the temperature, so we can feel comfortable in our home.
But wait for a second – what is that? There’s water dripping out of the air conditioning unit! Is this normal?
Possible causes of a leaking air conditioner
It’s totally normal that your air conditioner creates condensation in the dehumidification and cooling process. The evaporative coil of the indoor unit allows the ambient air to run through the fins, and together with refrigerant inside the pipe, removes the heat from the air. During this process, moisture in the air condenses into water droplets.
A problem occurs though if this water can’t drain away properly. This might be because there’s a blockage in the drainpipe or the filters are clogged which can then restrict airflow to the evaporator coil. As a result, the coil can get too cold and ice up.
Signs that indicate your air conditioner has a leak
An obvious indication of a leak is water persistently dripping out of the system (even when the air conditioner is turned off). This should definitely be looked at by an air conditioning technician before further use. Continued operations may cause water to run down the wall leaving nasty stains or even mould.
Other indicators are:
- Poor cooling performance of the system and/or long cooling cycles
- Watermarks can be noted under the indoor unit
- Water pools can be seen on the floor under the indoor unit
- Dripping noise can be heard inside the wall
How to prevent a leak in the first place?
- Have your filters cleaned regularly, so they don’t clog up
- Make sure your air conditioner is maintained regularly by a professional HVAC technician
