How to clear a blocked sink?

One of the most common plumbing emergencies is a blocked sink!!

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and call a plumber but there are a number of things you can do first to try and remedy the situation.

To start with, you need to take out anything that is blocking the plughole, such as food, hair or anything else. If it is too far down to reach with your hands then you can use a suitable chemical cleaner or even caustic soda. Make sure you don’t use anything that will damage your sink or your drains.

If this doesn’t work then it is time to get the plunger out and vigorously pump the plug hole. Give it a bit of time and make sure you have achieved a perfect seal around the plughole.

If the plunging doesn’t work then you are going to have to resort to more drastic measures. If you can get to it, you need to remove the trap, making sure that you have a bucket underneath to catch all the water that will pour out. If you can’t get to the trap then you will need to call a plumber. Once you have the trap off then you need to check for blockages, using a pipe cleaner if you need.

If it is still blocked, then your problem is in the drain itself and you should call a plumber to take care of it.
