New LED lifetime mesurement standards

New standards for the calculation of LED lifetimes provides consumers with a reliable comparison tool when purchasing LEDs. Previously the industry lacked a common set of rules with which to measure and project LED lifetime.

LM-80 is the current, approved method for measuring the lumen maintenance of LED packages. This method measures the number of hours that a light source remains ‘useful’ before its output reduces to 70%.

The new IES standard, known as TM-21, goes a step further and regulates which parts of the LM-80 testing can be used to predict LED lifetime calculations.

Industry experts advise that other factors need to be taken into account when estimating the lifetime of LED fixtures. Factors such as the thermal management optics and drivers, operating environment and the fixtures intended application.
