Safety switches and rental properties
Has your property got a safety switch?
From 1 March 2008 owners of rental property in Queensland must have a safety switch installed in their rental properties if one is not fitted.
Information for Landlords
- You must arrange to have a safety switch installed by a licensed electrician.
- After 1 March 2008, you may get fines of up to $1,500 if a switch has not been installed.
- Licensed electrical contractors can only install the switches.
- Find out more about what an electrical licence looks like, and check whether your electrician is licensed.
Information for Tenants
Just because you live in a rental property doesn’t mean that you can not have the same protection from the electric shock that people who live in their own properties have. It is now Law that all properties are required to have a safety switch within three months of the sale of a domestic residence constructed prior to 1992.
If you do not believe a safety switch is installed at the rental property you can:
- Firstly talk to your landlord or rental agent. Or call the Electrical Safety Infoline on 1300 650 662
