Should you filter your water?
Although Australians are fortunate to have safe drinking water at the turn of a tap, filtered water provides extra benefits including health, environmental, taste and can even prevent damage to your plumbing and appliances.
Old, corroded pipework can also cause increased levels of base metals and sediment in our water, resulting in bad taste and a build-up of particles and contaminants.
Fewer impurities & better taste
Filtered water provides the same smooth, clean taste like spring water by removing particles and contaminants that cause bad taste and odour.
No more bottled water
It not only benefits your taste buds but also helps reduce the need for pre-bottled water. Bottled water is more expensive per litre than milk, soft drink, and in some cases petrol. It not only costs you more but has many negative effects on the environment through its production and the large percentage of plastic bottles that end up in landfill. Filling up a reusable bottle with filtered water from your tap saves you money and reduces your carbon footprint.
Improved health benefits
Brisbane water is treated with chlorine and other disinfectants to remove harmful bacteria and micro-organisms and hinder their growth as the water travels through pipes. A good filtration system adds an extra layer of treatment, removing any unwanted natural and unnatural impurities such as sediment, excess treatment chemicals, organic matter, algae, dirt, rust and particulates down to 5 microns.
Protect your taps and appliances
Certain filtration systems can protect your fridge, washing machine and dishwasher by reducing the build-up of particles, contaminants and scale from pipework. This also reduces clogging and damage to taps, valves and showerheads.
Water filtration options
There are many options for water filtration, each offering a range of different benefits. Basic filtration usually uses carbon filters to rid of odours and taste.
Plumbed solutions generally come as either single, twin or backwash filter systems. A backwash system provides basic filtration down to 50 microns and reduces bacteria. They do not require cartridges as they self-clean through backwashing.
Twin cartridge systems filter down up to 5 microns, removing odour, taste, heavy metals and softening and dechlorinating the water. Cartridges need to be replaced every 6-12 months depending on the system and usage.
