Electrical Defect Rectification Specialists in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Redlands and Sunshine Coast
Receiving an official electrical defect notice can be alarming, but it is a necessary and critical notification that requires your immediate attention. It means that an authorised inspector, your electricity provider [such as Energex], or another authority has identified a safety hazard on your property that does not comply with current state safety standards. Don’t panic, but do act quickly. Most notices give you 21 working days to fix the issue before Energex is legally required to disconnect your power.

What is an Electrical Defect Notice?
An electrical defect notice, sometimes called a Form 17 in Queensland, is a legal document issued to a property owner when an electrical installation is found to be unsafe or non-compliant with the Electrical Safety Act 2002 and Australian Standards. You might receive a notice for a variety of reasons, often discovered during:
- A routine inspection
- Work being carried out by another trade
- An emergency callout
- A property sale inspection
- A network connection or alteration by your electricity distributor
It is crucial that you do not ignore this notice. Failure to rectify the identified defects within the specified timeframe can lead to fines or, most critically, the disconnection of your power supply to prevent the risk of fire or electric shock.
If the defect is classed as major or an immediate danger, Energex may have already disconnected your power. If this has happened, call our Emergency Electrician immediately on 1300 054 488.

Common Energex Defects We Fix
Our team sees these issues frequently across Greater Brisbane, Gold Coast & Sunshine Coast. We can quickly diagnose and fix:
Point of Attachment Defects
The “Point of Attachment” is where the Energex overhead cable connects to your house.
- The Issue: Broken brackets, rotting fascia boards, or the cable is pulling away from the house (low mains).
- The Fix: We re-secure the attachment point, often installing new raiser brackets or straightening the fascia to meet Energex standards.
Switchboard Issues
- The Issue: Old asbestos panels, exposed live parts, lack of safety switches, or the board is unreadable/unsafe for meter readers.
- The Fix: We perform a switchboard upgrade, removing hazardous materials and ensuring the board is safe for Energex access.
Consumer Mains
- The Issue: The cables running from the street to your switchboard are old, undersized or have degraded insulation.
- The Fix: We install new, compliant consumer mains cabling to handle your home’s power load safely.
Private Power Poles
- The Issue: If you have a pole on your land, it is your responsibility. It may be leaning, rotting or have termite damage.
- the Fix: We repair or replace private power poles to ensure they meet the network’s clearance requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you don’t rectify the defect within the timeframe specified (often 21 days), Energex is legally obligated to disconnect your power supply to remove the safety risk. You will then have to pay for the repairs plus a reconnection fee to get the power back on.
The homeowner. While Energex owns the cables in the street, the property owner is responsible for the point of attachment and the consumer mains.
You need a fully licensed electrician. For defects involving point of attachment or consumer mains, the electrician must be authorised to work on the incoming supply and must submit specific Electrical Work Requests (EWR) to Energex. Fallon Solutions electricians are fully qualified for this work.
