Safety Recall – SmartSpace Kit Home Electrical Components

The ACCC has issued a recall for faulty cabling, RCD, and circuit breaker sold as part of SmartSpace kit homes prior to July 2015 through the Bunnings Group Limited.

These products were sold by Bunnings through SmartSpace from 1 January 2012 to 1 July 2015 throughout Australia.

Recalled product

Cable

  • SDI Cable 1.5mm V90 450/750V to AS/NZS 5000.2 YAFEI
  • SRF Cable 3 x 2.5mm 450/750V V90 to AS/NZS 5000.2 YAFEI
  • SRF Cable 3 x 1.5mm 450/750V V90 TO AS/NZS 5000.2 YAFEI

Circuit breaker and Residual current device (RCD)

  • Marked JVM21-63 C16 240/415V~
  • Marked RCBO JVL5 C16 20mA 240V~

Faults or defects

Cables have failed some of the required ageing tests of AS/NZS 5000.2.

Insulation could become brittle earlier than acceptable by the standards. There is a risk of insulation breaking exposing cables if disturbed. Danger of electrical shock or fires due to exposure of live conductors.

Circuit breaker and RCD do not pose a safety risk, however, these electrical components are not approved for sale in Australia.

Hazards

Residents should be aware that there is a serious risk of electrical shock or fire due to the recalled electrical cable.

What to do now?

If you suspect you have these recalled products installed in your SmartSpace kit home or you purchased a kit home between the dates stated above contact SmartSpace support who will arrange for a licenced electrician to inspect the home and replace the affected electrical components.
