Signs your hot water system is failing
What to look out for in your hot water system
In order to maintain good care of your home’s hot water system, you should be aware of any signs which may indicate that your system is in need of repair. You should watch out for any leaks, corrosion, noise or smells coming from your system, as each of these signs could inform you of a serious problem. Read this informative article to find out more signs that your hot water system is failing.
Leaks
Obviously, if you can see water leaking or dripping from any plumbing in your home, you need to call a plumber however, hot water systems can be concealed and may need to be thoroughly checked. Some less obvious signs that may indicate that there is a leak in your hot water system include; mould or damp patches near the system or external corrosion of any visible pipes.
If you notice any of these signs, it is critical that you contact a licensed plumber as soon as possible, as leaks that are left unattended can cost you thousands in extensive water damage. Also, if you have electric hot water, water damage could cause your system and other electrical components in your home to short out.
Corrosion
Corrosion often occurs in older storage tanks, so if you have moved into a home with an existing tank it is important to check its age, as most tanks will last around 10 years before needing to be replaced (if well maintained). If you are noticing discoloured water coming from your system, this is often a tell-tale sign of corrosion in the storage tank. You will generally need to have the tank replaced and/or the system, depending on its age.

Noisey system
Is your hot water system making lots of loud noises? Hot water systems are not designed to be loud and they will often not be noticed at all. Rattling or popping-like noises coming from your hot water system indicate that there is a build-up of sediment and debris in your tank.
This occurs when a tank is left uncleaned over a long period of time, which allows debris to build up at the bottom of the tank. When a tank is heated up, the heat at the bottom becomes trapped by the sediment, causing it to build up at the bottom and eventually blast through the build-up to rise to the top of the tank, making a popping noise.
In order to prevent this from happening, hire a professional to make regular maintenance checks of your hot water system. If required, they will clean your tank, stopping any large sediment build-ups from occurring.
Sulphuric smell
If your home is fitted with a gas hot water system, then you may need to be wary of any sulphuric-like smells coming from your system. This often means that there is a gas leak in your hot water system. If you notice that the smell is coming from your system, contact a professional gas fitter immediately, as gas leaks are very dangerous.
