Lukewarm Hot Water System Repair in Raceview, Ipswich
From Lukewarm to “Beautiful Hot Water!”: A Raceview Hot Water Repair Story
Is there anything more frustrating than investing in a new hot water system, only to be rewarded with a weak, lukewarm shower?
When you’ve just spent good money on an upgrade, the last thing you expect is poor performance. You start to question everything: Was it installed incorrectly? Is the unit a lemon? Is this just going to be a huge, stressful hassle to fix?
This was the exact, frustrating position a homeowner in Raceview found herself in. Her recently installed hot water system just wasn’t doing its job, so she “got up the gumption” to call Fallon Solutions.
What she thought would be a major, costly problem turned out to be a simple fix, all thanks to a proper, honest diagnosis.
The Problem: A New Hot Water System Not Heating Water Properly
The customer in Raceview, Tammy, had been putting up with the problem for a while. Her household was experiencing two classic symptoms of a system fault:
- Lukewarm Water: The primary issue. The hot water system [was] not heating water properly, or so it seemed. The water at the taps and in the shower never reached a truly hot temperature.
- Low Water Pressure: Compounding the temperature issue, they also had a low pressure hot water system. The weak flow made for a truly unsatisfying shower.
When a new system fails like this, it’s especially confusing. Homeowners are left asking, “Why is my hot water system not heating water?” The immediate fear is that the brand-new unit is faulty and will need to be entirely replaced, leading to a long and difficult warranty claim.
Tammy was bracing for bad news, but she called our team for an expert opinion.

The Solution: A Blocked Valve, Not a Broken System
Our technician, Byron, arrived at the Raceview home (along with his colleague Navin) and, as Tammy’s review notes, was upfront and transparent from the start. He explained what he needed to check and what the potential costs would be before he started work.
Byron didn’t just look at the new tank and declare it faulty. He ran a series of professional temperature and pressure checks. The system itself was working perfectly—the tank was full of hot water. The problem wasn’t with making hot water; it was with delivering it.
This pointed him straight to one of the most common culprits in this scenario: the tempering valve.
What is a Tempering Valve?
A tempering valve is a critical safety device that is mandatory on all new hot water system installations in Australia.
- Your tank stores water at 60°C or higher (to prevent nasty bacteria like Legionella).
- However, 60°C water can cause a serious third-degree burn in just one second.
- The tempering valve sits after the tank. It blends a small amount of cold water with the 60°C hot water to ensure what comes out of your taps is a safe, anti-scald maximum of 50°C.
The Real Diagnosis
Byron suspected the tempering valve [was] blocked. These valves have very fine mesh strainers inside them. On a new installation, it’s common for tiny bits of debris (sediment, mineral flakes, or even a stray piece of plumbing tape) to get flushed through the pipes and caught in these strainers.
This blockage was “choking” the valve, causing both the low pressure hot water system and the lukewarm temperature (as the valve malfunctioned and mixed in too much cold water).
The fix was simple, and it wasn’t a replacement.
- Byron isolated the system.
- He removed the tempering valve.
- He thoroughly cleared the debris from the valve’s internal strainers.
- He reinstalled the valve and tested the system.
Instantly, the problem was solved. Full pressure was restored, and the home had “beautiful hot water” once again.
