Aldi in hot water over lead contamination in taps

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission recently conducted conclusive tests that Aldi’s “Easy Home” Spiral Spring Mixer Tap contaminates water with 15 times the safe level of lead.

The taps were included in Aldi’s special buy promotion from June 10 and Aldi stated that they were tested and watermarked to comply with Australian Safety Standards prior to going on sale. However, The ACCC is investigating the issue further to understand the risks. Those who have them installed are advised not to use them for drinking or cooking until more is known.

Acute lead poisoning is associated with decreased brain function and behavioural problems in young children and high blood pressure is a concern for the elderly. Other health concerns are abdominal pain, kidney damage and nerve and brain damage if consumed in high amounts and left untreated.

QBCC has supported the ACCC’s warning against consuming water from these taps until further testing is complete. They urge that any plumbing work, including removing the tapware should only be completed by a licensed plumber.

This case serves as a reminder to consumers to be cautious when buying imported, off the shelf tapware and appliances. For peace of mind, and to avoid lead poisoning from brass tapware, we recommend that you have stainless steel tapware installed for drinking and cleaning use. The fittings we supply are all sourced from accredited plumbing suppliers and are watermarked to comply with all Australian Standards.
