Who is Eligible for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
According to the Clean Energy Regulator, the eligibility is still subject to change but currently the proposed eligibility includes:
- A single solar battery system with a total capacity of 5kWh to 100 kWh will be eligible.
- The solar battery system’s usable capacity will be used to calculate the number of STCs it will be eligible for.
- The solar battery will need to be installed with a new or existing solar PV system.
- The solar battery system is considered installed when a certificate of electrical compliance is signed.

Other Considerations for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program

- Systems must be listed on the CEC approved product list.

FAQs
All eligible systems must have a nominal capacity in the range of 5kWh to 100kWh.
- Accreditation: Battery installations must be carried out by a Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accredited installer or under their on-site supervision.
- Compliance: The battery and installation must adhere to all relevant state and territory laws, including electrical safety regulations, and comply with Australian Standards and Best Practice Guide: Battery Storage Equipment.
- Documentation: The designer, retailer and installer must provide the system owner and regulator with written statements, evidence and other necessary documents.
- Inverter: The battery must be on the CEC list of compliant inverters approved for the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
- VPP Capability: On-grid battery systems need to be capable of being coordinated through a virtual power plant (VPP). This includes the ability to connect to the electricity grid, respond to signals from third-party VPP operators, and maintain a continuous internet connection.
The discount will be calculated based on the battery system’s usable capacity in kWh. In 2025, a battery installation can create 9.3 STCs per kWh of usable capacity, applied at a flat rate for up to 50kWh. The number of STCs a system is entitled to will decrease over time, from 9.3 STCs in 2025, to 4.7 STCs in 2030, reflecting the decrease in battery costs.
The rebate is available to both households and small businesses in Australia that own their own property.
Yes, to be eligible for the battery rebate your property must have an existing solar panel (PV) system already installed, or you must be installing a new one along with the battery.
