Why Mould Prevention Matters in Brisbane, Gold Coast & Sunshine Coast

Why Mould Prevention Matters for Air Conditioners in South East Queensland

Quick read:
South East Queensland’s humid climate means air-conditioning systems regularly deal with moisture. Regular cleaning and maintenance are important, and a mould inhibitor can provide an additional preventative measure to help discourage mould growth inside the system.

Why your air conditioner is different from other appliances

Your air conditioner doesn’t simply blow cold air.

As warm air moves across the cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses inside the system. That moisture then needs to drain away correctly.

Add dust, warm weather and South East Queensland humidity and you’ve got an environment where unwanted build-up can occur.

That’s one reason regular air-conditioning cleaning is particularly important in our climate.

Signs your A/C might need some attention

Look out for:

  • A musty or damp smell when the system starts
  • Visible dirt around the indoor unit or vents
  • Reduced airflow
  • Water leaking from the indoor unit
  • A system that hasn’t had a professional clean for some time

So, what does a mould inhibitor actually do?

A mould inhibitor is designed to help discourage future mould growth, particularly around areas of the air-conditioning system where moisture is present.

It isn’t a substitute for cleaning an already dirty system, and it doesn’t replace regular maintenance.

Think of it as another preventative measure once the system is clean.

Your questions answered

Does a mould inhibitor mean I don’t need to clean my air conditioner?
No. Filters, coils, drains and other components still require appropriate cleaning and maintenance.

What’s the difference between removing mould and preventing mould?
Cleaning removes existing contamination and build-up. An inhibitor is intended to help discourage future growth.

How often should my air conditioner be serviced?
The appropriate frequency depends on the system, its environment and how heavily it is used. Fallon recommends regular professional servicing, particularly before periods of heavy summer use.
