When Your Dryer Is Playing Up – Try These Quick Fixes Before You Call in the Pros
Is Your Dryer Acting Up This Queensland Winter?
With chilly mornings and unreliable sunshine, your clothes dryer becomes a true household hero during winter in Queensland. However, when it starts taking too long to dry, leaves clothes damp, or makes strange noises, it can quickly throw your laundry routine into chaos.
Before you rush out to replace it or assume the worst, try these quick and simple checks — they could save you time, stress, and money.
Clean the Lint Filter (Every Time!)
It may sound basic, but a clogged lint filter is the most common cause of poor dryer performance. Not only does it reduce drying efficiency, but it also poses a fire risk.
Tip: Clean the lint filter after every load to keep your dryer running safely and effectively.
Check the Dryer Vent and Duct
If your dryer is running but not heating properly—or takes forever to finish a cycle—a blocked vent may be to blame. Lint often builds up in the flexible hose behind the dryer or inside the external wall vent, which restricts airflow.
To fix this, unplug the dryer, disconnect the duct, and clear out any buildup. You might be amazed at how much this simple step improves performance.
Avoid Overloading
It’s tempting to cram in one last towel, especially on busy laundry days. However, overloading the drum prevents warm air from circulating properly. As a result, your clothes may come out hot but still damp.
To improve efficiency and extend the life of your appliance, keep your loads moderate and evenly distributed.
Strange Noises? Don’t Ignore Them
Thumping, squealing, or grinding noises could point to a few issues. These sounds may be caused by coins, buttons, or small items trapped in the drum. Alternatively, worn drum rollers or a slipping belt might be the culprits.
Start by checking for loose objects inside. If the noise continues, it’s time to call in a professional before the damage gets worse.
No Power at All?
If your dryer won’t turn on, check that it’s properly plugged in and that the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped. These are quick and easy things to rule out.
However, if those steps don’t solve the problem, avoid attempting any DIY electrical work. It’s safer—and often cheaper—to have one of our qualified technicians handle it.
