How do I keep my smoke alarms working?
Smoke alarms will only work properly if they are maintained properly. Use the quick guide below to check your smoke alarm is in good working order. - Check the test button monthly- if you have high ceilings use a broom or mop handle to activate.
- Keep them clean- vacuum over the smoke alarm to remove dust build-up.
- Replace batteries once a year – choose a Memorial Day ie public holiday
- Do not paint over a smoke alarm
- Do not remove the batteries
- Smoke alarms have expiry dates so note the expiry when installing – use a marker pen inside the unit so you know when it needs replacing
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
