Queensland’s New Smoke Alarm Laws

Are you prepared for Queensland’s upcoming smoke alarm law changes?
Starting from January 1, 2027, all homes in the state will be required to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed in bedrooms and other designated areas. This mandatory upgrade aims to enhance fire safety and protect lives.

What are the new requirements?

  • Photoelectric smoke alarms: These are the only type of smoke alarms allowed, as they are more sensitive to slow-burning fires.
  • Interconnected: All smoke alarms in the home must be interconnected, ensuring that if one alarm detects smoke, they all sound.
  • 10-year lifespan: Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years or if they fail a test.
  • Hardwired or battery-powered: Alarms can be hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery.

Which homes are exempt?
Only owner-occupied homes purchased before January 1, 2022, are exempt from the new laws. However, they must still meet existing standards, including having a working smoke alarm on each level and replacing faulty or outdated alarms.

When do the new laws apply to rentals?
All homes or units being sold or leased, or when an existing lease is renewed, must comply with the new smoke alarm laws.

What about new and renovated homes?
Building certifiers will ensure that new homes and those undergoing major renovations meet the smoke alarm requirements during the approval process.

Key locations for smoke alarms:

  • At least one alarm must be installed in each bedroom.
  • If there’s a hallway connecting bedrooms, an alarm should be placed there. Otherwise, it should be installed in a room that connects to bedrooms.
  • If there are no bedrooms on a level, at least one alarm must be installed in the path of travel to exit the building.

Protect yourself, your tenants and your loved ones from fire hazards by installing interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in your home or rental property. For detailed information on Queensland’s new smoke alarm laws, read the Queensland Fire Service brochure here.

For your safety and the safety of everyone in your home, hardwired smoke alarms must be installed by a licenced electrician.

Why use photoelectric smoke alarms?

Photoelectric smoke alarms ‘see’ the smoke. These alarms detect visible particles of combustion. Photoelectric alarms are particularly responsive to smouldering fires which give off a lot of smoke. This style of smoke alarm provides residents with the earliest warning of a fire situation.

Are you looking for the ultimate in home safety?

Interconnected smoke alarms are the answer. These advanced detectors form a network throughout your home, ensuring that if one alarm is triggered, they all sound, alerting your entire family to potential danger, no matter where they are.

Key benefits of interconnected smoke alarms:

  • Enhanced safety: Immediate notification of a fire, even in remote areas of your home.
  • Peace of mind: Knowing your family is protected from fire hazards.
  • Reliability: Powered by both hardwired electricity and a long-lasting battery.
  • Customised solutions: Tailored to fit your home’s specific needs and budget.
