Queensland Smoke Alarm Laws 2027: Is Your Home Compliant?

While many Queensland homeowners are planning home upgrades, winter comfort improvements or energy saving projects, smoke alarm compliance is one essential safety task that should not be left behind.
All existing private homes, townhouses and units in Queensland must have compliant interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed by 1 January 2027.
Under Queensland’s smoke alarm laws, alarms must be installed in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. If there is no hallway, the alarm must be placed between the bedrooms and the other parts of that level. If there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the home.
To comply, smoke alarms must be photoelectric, interconnected, less than 10 years old, and compliant with Australian Standard AS 3786:2014. They must also be either hard-wired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery. Interconnection is especially important because when one alarm detects smoke, they all sound, helping give your household earlier warning no matter where the fire starts.
For many homes, becoming compliant may involve more than simply replacing one old smoke alarm. Some properties need extra alarms installed in bedrooms or hallways, while others need to upgrade to an interconnected system that meets current legal requirements. Existing hard wired alarms that need replacement must be replaced with compliant hard wired photoelectric alarms.
Although the final deadline is still approaching, now is a smart time to act. As 1 January 2027 gets closer, more homeowners, landlords and property sellers are likely to rush to upgrade their alarms. Booking early can help you avoid delays and gives you time to fix any issues before the deadline arrives.
Smoke alarm compliance is not just about ticking a legal box. It is about protecting your family, your home, and giving everyone inside more time to get out safely in an emergency.
At Fallon Solutions, we offer a $198 Smoke Alarm Check to help make the process easier. It is a practical way to understand whether your current smoke alarms meet Queensland’s requirements, and if your alarms pass, you can also receive a compliance certificate for added peace of mind.
