Smart Meter? You May Be Able to Tap Into Free Daytime Power
From 1 July 2026, eligible South East Queensland households with smart meters may be able to access the new Solar Sharer Offer, which includes three hours of free daytime electricity between 11am and 2pm.
The idea is simple; use more electricity when solar generation is abundant, instead of pushing more household energy use into the evening peak.
For many homes, that could mean shifting appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, pool pumps, EV charging and, in some cases, electric hot water heating into the middle of the day.
But when it comes to hot water, it is important not to simply switch things off and hope for the best.
If you have an electric storage hot water system, a correctly set timer may help your system heat during the free electricity window. However, not every system or tariff is suitable. Some hot water systems are connected to controlled load tariffs, some households need more hot water than others, and storage tanks still need to heat to safe temperatures to protect water quality.
Before making changes, check your electricity plan, your hot water setup and your household’s usage. You can book a Fallon licensed electrician to confirm whether your system can be safely timed to make better use of the 11am–2pm window.
We can check your hot water system, timer setup and electrical configuration so you can make smarter use of changing energy offers without risking cold showers, safety issues or unnecessary bill surprises. To understand the offer more click here.
