Simple hacks to be more environmentally friendly

As we become more and more environmentally conscious it is important to remember the little habits we can change every day that make a big impact. Here are some simple tips to help you be more environmentally friendly at home.

1. Reusable shopping bags

As you know, Australian major supermarket chains Coles and Woolworths have stopped supplying their single-use plastic bags in an effort to reduce plastics and their effect on the environment.

Reusable shopping bags are a small change to your shopping habits but have a huge impact on reducing waste and plastics ending up in landfill or waterways.

2. Water Bottles

Bottled water not only takes its toll on the environment but on your purse strings! In most cases, bottled water costs more per litre than petrol and essentially, all you are paying for is the plastic that ends up harming the environment.

If you buy bottled water for better taste, consider getting a water filter or filtration system that you can fill a reusable bottle with. Read more about the benefits of a water filtration system here water filter systems.

3. No more snail mail

Talk to your service providers and banks to convert your billing and statements to online or email. This is usually as simple as logging into your account and changing your communication preferences.

4. Repair Leaks

A dripping tap or running toilet might seem like something you can put off but they contribute to thousands of litres of water wastage each year. Water is a precious resource, especially here in Australia. Make sure you attend to any leaks, drips or bursts as soon as possible. Call a Fallon Plumber at 1300 712 028 to attend to any leaks around the house.

5. Appliances

Did you know that using your dishwasher is more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient than washing up by hand? They use much less water and most dishwashers have an ‘eco-mode that cleans more efficiently.

LED downlights are not only more energy efficient but are also safer than halogen bulbs. LED lights are 4 to 7 times more efficient than traditional halogen lighting. While they are more expensive to purchase they are cheaper overall in terms of energy costs and less frequent need for replacement. Watch our video and find out how much you can save each year by swapping to LED. Call a Fallon Electrician at 1300 712 028 for a quote for an LED swap over and start saving on your energy bills.

Consider upgrading older appliances for newer, more energy-efficient ones. While buying new may cost more in the beginning, the savings add up in energy costs and the impact on the environment decreases!

6. Keep up with your air conditioning maintenance

If your air conditioning is clogged with dirt, mould and dust it is having to work harder, and less efficiently to heat or cool. Make sure you have regular maintenance on your air conditioning units to ensure they are working efficiently and providing cleaner, safer air. Our video explains what’s involved in an intensive air conditioning clean and the benefits of regular maintenance. Give us a call to book a professional air conditioning service or clean.
