SKL electrical cable prohibition notice

The Electrical Safety Office has issued a prohibition notice applying to the sale and installation of a range of 2013 TPS electrical cables imported by SKL cables.

The SKL brand thermoplastic sheath (TPS) electrical cables have been identified as not complying with Australian safety standards due to an issue with the PVC insulation and sheathing compound which may lead to a reduction in the insulation integrity. This may result in electric shock or fire.

Prohibited SKL Electrical Cable

The prohibition applies to SKL brand TPS twin and earth cable are marked ‘2013’, sold or distributed by SKL Cables Australia Pty Ltd in the following sizes with PVC sheathing and insulating.

• SKL brand model No. VVF2C1E001 1mm2 thermoplastic sheathed and insulated cable marked with the year 2013
• SKL brand model No. VVF2C1E105 1.5mm2 thermoplastic sheathed and insulated cable marked with the year 2013
• SKL brand model No. VVF2C1E205 2.5mm2 thermoplastic sheathed and insulated cable marked with the year 2013
• SKL brand model No. VVF2C1E004 4mm2 thermoplastic sheathed and insulated cable marked with the year 2013
• SKL brand model No. VVF2C1E006 6mm2 thermoplastic sheathed and insulated cable marked with the year 2013
• SKL brand model No. VVF2C1E010 10mm2 thermoplastic sheathed and insulated cable marked with the year 2013
• SKL brand model No. VVF2C1E016 16mm2 thermoplastic sheathed and insulated cable marked with the year 2013

Action to take

The cable is not seen as being an immediate risk to homes however the product may deteriorate faster than standard cable, particularly when exposed to heat. Homeowners who suspect this cable has been used in their homes are advised to contact their builder or licensed electrician for a risk assessment.

The Electrical Safety Office is in discussions with SKL Cable regarding recalls and distribution of the 2013 models affected. Please note the 2015 model is not affected by the prohibition.
