A Change To Save A Life

April 1st is coming up which means it may soon be time to change your smoke alarm batteries. We are encouraging all households to change their smoke alarm batteries if you have smoke alarms with replaceable batteries, because only working smoke alarms provide the critical early warning in the event of a fire.

  • The battery of your smoke alarm discharges over time when it’s not being utilised, so if you have a smoke alarm with a replaceable battery, it should be replaced once a year.

Smoke alarms are one of the most important, if not THE most important safety devices in your home. They are literally life savers and just like any of your other appliances in your home, they need to be maintained to ensure they are in good working order. That’s why you should also take the time to:

  •  Test your smoke alarms once a month

Press the button to test if it’s working. Also, make sure that everyone in the house knows what the alarm sounds like & what to do when it goes off. If the alarm doesn’t work, even though you replaced the battery, call a licensed technician that will take care of this issue immediately.
If your smoke alarms are hardwired to the mains, isolate the power supply and test the smoke alarm to check if the backup battery is functioning.

  •  Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years

When you’re changing the battery, check the back of the alarm so see when it expires. Photoelectric alarms should be replaced every ten years from the date of being manufactured unless of course there is an issue with the smoke alarm. Always make sure they comply with Australian standards.

  •  Give it a vacuum clean

Keep your smoke alarms free of dust using a vacuum cleaner with a dusting attachment and safe ladder. Remember you should never paint over smoke alarms.

We all know how busy life can get but taking the time to check your smoke alarms can save lives.

If you have any more questions, give us a call and we can arrange for one of our licensed electricians to help you.
