Last Chance for Bigger Solar & Battery Rebates Before They Drop!

Thinking about installing solar panels, a home battery, or even a heat pump hot water system? Don’t miss out, rebates fall after December 31

From 1 January 2026, the Federal Government’s Renewable Energy Target will start winding down. That means the rebate for new solar systems and batteries will shrink every year until the scheme ends in 2030.

What’s Changing

When you install a solar system, battery, or heat pump, you receive an upfront discount through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). These certificates represent the amount of clean energy your system will generate (or offset) over its life (also known as the “deeming period.”) From 2026, the deeming period drops by one year for all eligible systems.
Fewer years = fewer certificates = smaller rebate.

For home batteries under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, the rebate also steps down annually, moving from roughly 30% in 2025 to around 27% in 2026, continuing to reduce each year until 2030.

So if you install before December 31, you’ll secure the higher 2025 rebate value. Wait until next year, and your rebate will shrink and your out-of-pocket cost increases.

How Much Could You Lose by Waiting?

Here are easy, real-world examples using official Clean Energy Regulator data (based on 9.3 STCs per kWh in 2025 vs 8.4 in 2026, with each STC worth around $40):

Battery Size 2025 Rebate 2026 Rebate You Lose
10 kWh 93 STCs × $40 = $3,720 84 STCs × $40 = $3,360 -$360
13.5 kWh 126 STCs × $40 = $5,022 113 STCs × $40 = $4,536 -$486
20 kWh 186 STCs × $40 = $7,440 168 STCs × $40 = $6,720 -$720
50 kWh (max eligible) 465 STCs × $40 = $18,600 420 STCs × $40 = $16,800 -$1,800
