Before You Switch That Ceiling Fan Back On This Summer… Check These 5 Things

Quick read:
Ceiling fans are about to start working overtime across South East Queensland. Before the hottest weather arrives, check older fans for wobbling, unusual noises, speed problems and other signs they may need attention.
Ceiling fan season has arrived
For months, your ceiling fans may have barely moved.
Then suddenly summer arrives and they’re running for hours every day.
October is a great time to switch them on and make sure everything is operating as it should.
Give your fans this quick summer check
- Is it wobbling?
A small amount of movement can occur with some fans, but noticeable wobbling can be associated with issues such as loose components, blade imbalance or the installation itself.
- Is it making a new noise?
Ticking, humming or grinding noises are worth investigating rather than simply turning the television up.
- Are all the speeds working?
A fan stuck on one speed could indicate a problem with the controller, capacitor or another component.
- Is the light working properly?
If your fan incorporates a light, check both functions before summer.
- Has the fan seen better days?
Older fans can sometimes be repaired, while in other cases upgrading to a modern model may make more sense.
Why ceiling fans and air conditioning make a good team
A ceiling fan doesn’t actually lower the room’s air temperature in the same way an air conditioner does.
Instead, moving air across your skin can help you feel cooler.
That makes ceiling fans useful both on milder days when you don’t need air conditioning and alongside your A/C when you want better air circulation around the room.
Thinking about an upgrade?
Fallon Solutions electricians can:
- Install a new ceiling fan
- Replace an existing fan
- Install fans you’ve already purchased
- Supply and install new fans
- Add fan lights
- Install or upgrade remote controls
- Diagnose noisy, wobbling or faulty fans
Electrical installation and wiring should always be completed by an appropriately licensed electrician.
