What are solar batteries good for?
Learn more about how solar batteries work and how they can help you maximise your energy savings.
Mick
So Alan you’ve put this solar battery in as part of a solar energy system. What’s the best advice to homeowners considering a battery in their home?
Alan
Just have a look at their energy consumption and the time of the day when they use their power. So the battery can store it so they can use it when they need it.
Mick
So you want to make sure you get the right size battery depending on the energy consumption.
Alan
That’s right.
Mick
So what can you tell me about this battery?
Alan
So our supply partners have given us the BYD high voltage lithium battery. This one can store up to 13.8kW and it’s expandable as well.
Mick
How expandable can it be?
Alan
So we can add another 3 battery units on top of this one and we can have a total of 3 towers.
Mick
60kw of stored power.
Alan
Yes
Mick
Wow, that’s fantastic. Ok, just so I’ve got this right though. The power I use during the day, created by my solar panels comes in, stored into here so I can use it later?
Alan
That’s right. So rather than selling your power back to the street straight away where you don’t normally get paid very much, you can store it and use it later. And that way you are increasing your power savings.
Mick
What I pay them, the power companies, is quite a lot. But if I can make my own free power, and rather than sell it back to them. Cause if I didn’t have this, I’d just be selling back to them at a really low rate. Correct?
Alan
Yes, that’s right.
Mick
Ok, so by having this I’ve got power overnight, avoiding those power charges that I’d normally pay from the power company.
Alan
That’s correct.
Mick
Yeah, great ok so break out protection, I remember hearing you talk about that.
Alan
So yes, this unit has an essential power supply unit in it so in the event of a power outage this will automatically change over and if it’s at night time it will run completely off the batteries and it’ll power up your lights and power.
Mick
So the essential things like my fridge and keeping my lights on so I’m not in the dark at night. So I can’t run my aircon?
Alan
Ah, no aircon.
Mick
Yeah, no exactly. But I think I understand a lot more about batteries mate thank you very much for that conversation.
Alan
You’re welcome.
